BLURRED VISION RETURNING AFTER CATARACT SURGERY: Nd LASER TREATMENT TO IMPROVE VISION AT NHAN DAN GIA DINH HOSPITAL – SAI GON CAMPUS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eyes are often described as the windows to the soul. Through our eyes, we experience life in countless shades and colors, sometimes as radiant as the morning sun, sometimes as peaceful as a quiet autumn morning. Yet as we grow older, our vision may gradually become less clear. It was during such a time that Mrs. L.L.H., 67, a resident of Vinh Hoi Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, came to Nhan Dan Gia Dinh hospital – Sai Gon campus for an eye examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, Mrs. H. initially experienced clearer vision and a significant improvement in her quality of life. However, after some time, her vision gradually became blurred again. By the time she visited Nhan Dan Gia Dinh hospital – Sai Gon campus, the visual acuity in her right eye had deteriorated significantly, and she was only able to count fingers at a distance of approximately 50 cm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, Dr. Tran Cong Danh, ophthalmologist, found that the intraocular lens had partially shifted across the pupil. More importantly, the thin membrane behind the intraocular lens, the remaining posterior capsule had become significantly cloudy and fibrotic in the central area, obstructing the passage of light into the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This condition is known as Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In simple terms, during cataract surgery using the Phaco technique (phacoemulsification)<\/strong>, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. The eye\u2019s natural lens capsule is preserved to support and maintain the artificial lens in the appropriate position. The back portion of this membrane is called the posterior capsule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, the posterior capsule may gradually become cloudy, causing patients to feel as though they are looking through a veil, with images becoming blurred and less distinct than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After carefully examining and assessing the actual condition of Mrs. H.\u2019s eye, the physician determined that posterior capsule opacification was the primary cause of her reduced vision and selected Nd laser treatment to create an opening in the cloudy posterior capsule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Nd:YAG laser<\/strong>, there is no need for another open surgical procedure like the previous cataract surgery. Instead, the laser is used to create a small opening in the cloudy posterior capsule, allowing light to pass more easily into the eye. This procedure, known as Nd:YAG laser<\/strong> posterior capsulotomy, is a rapid and effective treatment for improving vision in patients with posterior capsule opacification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following treatment, Mrs. H.\u2019s right eye gradually regained clearer vision. Her visual acuity improved significantly to 6\/10 at a testing distance of 5 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mrs. H., however, 6\/10 was more than just a number on a visual acuity chart. It meant that the images before her became clearer and that familiar daily activities once again became easier and more convenient. After days of concern as her vision became increasingly blurred, she regained the confidence to see life more clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. H.\u2019s story also serves as a reminder: if your vision is becoming increasingly blurred or begins to decline again after cataract surgery, do not assume that it is simply a consequence of aging. Such changes may have an underlying cause that requires examination and assessment by an ophthalmologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
