LISTENING TO THE STORY OF A 64-YEAR-OLD PATIENT’S EYES: PHACO SURGERY COMBINED WITH PUPILLOPLASTY – A “2-IN-1” SOLUTION TO IMPROVE VISION AND REDUCE GLARE AT NHAN DAN GIA DINH HOSPITAL – SAI GON CAMPUS

For six consecutive months, Mr. T.K.H., 64, a resident of Sai Gon Ward, noticed that the vision in his right eye was becoming increasingly blurred. What troubled him even more was the intense glare he experienced whenever he stepped outside into bright sunlight, affecting many of his familiar daily activities.

Behind these symptoms was a story that began many years ago.

His right eye had previously sustained an injury and undergone surgery when he was young. For many years afterward, he was able to carry on with his daily life as usual. It was only when his vision began to change that he visited the Ophthalmology Clinic at Nhan dan Gia Dinh hospital – Sai Gon campus, where the effects of that old injury were examined more closely.

His right eye had developed a cataract, while the pupil had also become deformed and was unable to constrict normally due to the previous trauma. If only the cataract were treated, his vision could improve, but the abnormal pupil could continue to cause uncomfortable glare, particularly in bright sunlight.

After a comprehensive assessment, Tran Cong Danh, MD, MSc, Ophthalmology Specialist, selected a specialized treatment approach: Phacoemulsification (Phaco) combined with iris repair and pupilloplasty.

What made this case distinctive was that two problems affecting the same eye were addressed during a single surgery. The cloudy natural lens was removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). At the same time, the ophthalmologist repaired the iris and reconstructed the pupil, reducing the size of the previously deformed pupil.

This combined procedure therefore aimed not only to improve visual acuity but also to enhance the overall quality of vision, particularly by reducing glare when exposed to bright light.

Following surgery, the vision in Mr. H.’s right eye improved. For him, the result was more than just a number on a visual acuity chart—it also meant regaining greater comfort in the familiar activities of everyday life.

💙 EVERY PAIR OF EYES HAS A STORY WORTH LISTENING TO

Every pair of eyes has its own story. Some changes develop silently over time. Previous injuries, structural abnormalities, or eye diseases that emerge with age may simultaneously affect both visual acuity and the quality of everyday vision.

That is why these changes deserve attention and timely examination, giving patients the opportunity to have their eye conditions thoroughly assessed and receive appropriate treatment.

At the Ophthalmology Clinic – Nhan dan Gia Dinh hospital – Sai Gon campus, patients receive comprehensive eye examinations and individualized treatment plans based on their specific conditions. When specialized intervention is required, different treatment techniques may be combined, when clinically indicated, to address multiple eye problems during the same course of treatment.

👁️ Even the smallest changes in your eyes deserve attention. Blurred vision, glare, discomfort in bright light, or a history of eye trauma are all signs that should not be overlooked.

This is also the message of World Sight Day – October 8, 2026: “Love Your Eyes.”

Loving your eyes is not only about seeing clearly. It is also about paying attention to changes in your vision and proactively seeking the right eye care when needed.
